If a particular squadmate is not available, their name is not shown and only a blackened silhouette of the character is visible. The squadmate selection screen for Mass Effect displays the six possible squadmates. Shepard may only take exactly two squadmates in any 'shore party,' so choose carefully as Shepard cannot usually reselect squadmates after leaving the ship, and certain missions, especially major ones, may restrict Shepard's ability to return to the Normandy.
